Recently one of our clients had her Facebook account hacked and the debit card details stored in that account were used to withdraw money. Not a nice thing to see in your account at any time! With so many reports of scamming going around at the moment, here are our tips from our in-house IT consultant. What can you do to keep your accounts safe?
IT: Having a strong and secure IT system should be a priority for all businesses. This includes more than running the latest software. We can help with recommending and providing the best hardware and software for your business so you’re running at the optimal speed, setting up secure systems with ongoing management and more. Contact us for more details.
Don’t open that email! If you or your staff receive an email you think looks suspicious don’t open it. If you were too quick and couldn’t help it, make sure you have a plan in place to keep your business safe. Click here for a quick guide on what to do when things go wrong
Multi-factor authentication: If you’re unsure what it is, do your research or ask someone. Turn it on wherever you can to add that extra level of security. If you set up a good password system now, you’ll have less to worry about and managing them every year is easy.
Passwords: You’ve probably heard it before. Make them strong and use a combination of letters – capital and lowercase, characters and numbers. Change your password if it’s been a year or more, and whenever you’ve had a security breach. We recommend LastPass Password manager which stores all your passwords in a vault where they’re organised and encrypted for safekeeping. It can also generate strong passwords for you.
Windows 7 End of Life
You may have heard that Windows 7 is approaching it’s ‘end of life’. This means that after the 14th January 2020 it won’t be supported by Microsoft and there won’t be any software or security updates. If you continue to use Windows 7 without the security updates from Microsoft, you could be at a greater risk of viruses and hackers. If you’re currently running Windows 7, talk to our IT consultant, Scott about the easiest way to upgrade your system.
